Jackie’s Soul Food is a registered non-profit soup kitchen based in Gugulethu, Cape Town. My name is Jacaranda Nkomo, and I founded this organisation in 2022 after witnessing the growing hunger in my community. When I was working, I would often be fortunate to help neighbours by sharing small essentials like bread and sugar whenever my neighbours were in need. People felt safe with me, and I felt trusted by them. When I retired, even though I no longer had the same means, the community still came to me. They shared their struggles and asked for help. That’s when I realised the need was bigger than I could handle alone. I decided to open Jackie’s Soul Food, a place not just for meals, but for hope, dignity, and emotional support. Currently, we serve around 120 to 150 people once a week. However, the demand is growing, and we desperately want to expand and serve more days. Each meal we provide is more than just food; it's a moment of care, a conversation, and a chance for people to feel seen. We give not only nourishment but emotional support, advice, and hope. Your contributions will directly fund ingredients, cooking supplies, and gas needed to prepare meals for more days each week. With steady support, we can move from serving once a week to three or more days, ensuring that more children, elderly residents, and families have consistent access to nutritious meals. Donations also help us create a safe space where people can share their burdens, receive advice, and regain a sense of belonging.
