Campaign Story
Because compassion doesn't take a holiday. While many families gather around festive tables . . . hundreds of people in our community will spend Christmas Day under bridges, on pavements and in forgotten places. Christmas should never be another reminder that someone has been left behind. Each year, Breaking Boundaries Building Bridges serves a warm Christmas meal to homeless members of our community, but we serve much more than food. We serve dignity. Conversation. Kindness. Human connection. For many, it is the only moment all year when someone remembers their name. We need R30,000 to make this year's Christmas Lunch Under The Bridge possible. Together we can remind every person that they are seen. That they matter. That hope still exists. #ChristmasLunchUnderTheBridge: The idea is the brainchild of Bryan Torien, from Lansdowne. He said it came about when he and a friend were walking around the Waterfront . "We walked under that bridge to get onto Somerset Road, and we saw the people living under the bridge, and my friend said to me we should do something special for them on Christmas one day, where we sit down with them and we eat with them." Torien put his idea out on social media. It was an instant hit and so Lunch under the bridge – the official name of this project – started gaining momentum. Community Christmas Lunch Under the Bridge – it is a special Christmas lunch specifically for the City of Cape Town’s homeless and is our flagship programme we started in 2021. It is a traditional, annual event that takes place on Christmas Day. Historically, it is a festive meal with all the trimmings, a celebration and community support. Local celebrities and community members have helped support and organize the event. The lunch table is historically set up at Ebenezer Street bridge in Green Point. For a starter seafood gratin is served. The main meal consists of butter chicken curry, roti, roast chicken, roast lamb, roast vegetables, yellow rice, and roast potatoes. Guests are also spoilt for choice with such desserts as trifle, boeber (a Cape Malay delicacy), and more. We have also extended this event to include Eid when Muslims celebrate Ramadaan. #boekaunderthebridge - The aim is to spread love. Help us serve hope this Christmas.
